Congratulations to Steven Hart, who has been awarded a 2015 National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) Fellowship. Steven's current research is focused different aspects of microbial fuel cells (MFCs) ranging from biocathodes to biosensors.
Congratulations to Dr. Sudeep Popat, who was named Biodesign Employee of the Quarter for this quarter. Dr. Popat was nominated for Employee of the Quarter for his leadership in designing and implementing SCEB's websites. Congrats Sudeep!
The Swette Center for Environmental Biotechnology announced that Annika Faucon, Denton Holzer and Sanya Mehta have been awarded the 2014-2015 Swette Undergraduate Sustainability Internships. The internships allow junior and seniors in science and engineering to participate in established research projects. These projects encourage sustainable solutions to societal issues through scientific advancements. Annika will be working with the photobioenergy team to explore microbial communities in photobioreactors. Denton's research will focus on understanding hydrolysismechanisms, which plays a critical role in wastewater applications. Sanya will be researching bioremediation using membrane biofilm reactors (MBfRs). The interns will begin their research this summer. Congratulations Annika, Denton, and Sanya!
Bradley Lusk Receives Award for Five Years of Service at Arizona's Annual Science and Engineering Fair
This year marked Bradley Lusk's fifth year as a judge at Arizona's Annual Science and Engineering Fair (AzSEF). For his fifth year, Bradley judged senior level microbiology students.
Bradley has a message for all of the high school students, "Seeing all of the high school students doing research at such an advanced level was very inspirational! Congratulations to all of this year's participants. College is ready for you!"
This year's event was sponsored by the Arizona Science Center and hosted in the Phoenix Convention Center.
Joe Miceli has received an ASM Travel Grant to attend the 2014 American Society of Microbiology General Meeting in Boston, MA, where he will present a poster on his work titled "Improving the Efficiency of MXCs by Managing Mixed Microbial Communities Using High Substrate Loadings." Congratulations Joe!
