The Torres lab recently published "Combining microbial cultures for efficient production of electricity from butyrate in a microbial electrochemical cell" in Bioresource Technology. The paper focuses on microbial community management to encourage butyrate fermentation to acetate by Gammaproteobacteria and Clostridia, which is then utilized by Geobacter to produce electricity. The authors include Joseph Miceli (lead author), Dr. Prathap Parameswaran, Dr. César Torres, and Dr. Rosa Krajmalnik-Brown. Check it out here!
Several members of the Torres lab and Swette Center just published "Buffer pKa and Transport Govern the Concentration Overpotential in Electrochemical Oxygen Reduction at Neutral pH" in ChemSusChem. Dr. Sudeep Popat, Dongwon Ki, Michelle Young, Dr. Bruce Rittmann and Dr. Cesar Torres published the paper which demonstrates that cathode overpotentials are heavily influenced by the type of buffer used at the cathode and the buffers' diffusion properties.
